Ambassador Eva Nowotny was born in Vienna. Having received a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna she joined the Austrian Foreign Service in March 1973. She had her first foreign posting at the Austrian Embassy in Cairo, where she stayed from 1975 till 1978. She then was transferred as Counselor to the Austrian Mission at the United Nations in New York and worked in this capacity till summer 1983. Upon her return to headquarters in Vienna, Dr. Nowotny was appointed Foreign Policy Advisor to the Austrian Federal Chancellor, a position she maintained till November 1992. From 1992 till 1997 Dr. Nowotny served as the Austrian Ambassador to France, from 1997 till 1999 as the Austrian Ambassador to the Court of St. James. In December 1999 she was appointed as Director General for EU affairs in the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and stayed in this function till September 2003. From September 2003 till September 2008 Ambassador Nowotny was the Austrian Ambassador to the United States of America. Ambassador Nowotny retired from the Foreign Service in October 2008. Immediately after her retirement she was appointed President of the Austrian UNESCO Commission.
